HM Prison Service – Water cost reduction project.

H²O Building Services was recently awarded a project to carry out water and waste water cost reduction surveys, three prison’s were selected.

Overcharges by the local water company Southern Water were identified, in excess of £ 400,000 worth of refunds are estimated to be available and annual overcharges estimated at over £ 100,000.

Areas of additional water savings were identified, showers to inmate areas with flow rates in excess of 25 litres per minute need to be replaced with the latest water saving showers, also urinals were flushing uncontrolled and require controls to prevent automatic flushing out of occupancy.

The Prison Service spend around £ 50m per year on water and waste water services, a £15m to £20m per year saving could be achieved with a focused approach.
