A LinkedIn member appoints Water Audit Experts and produces a £16000 water bill refund

Water Audit Experts H20 Building Services were appointed by a company that specialises in environmental hydraulics, civic engineering and the management of water based in Oxford to assist them in reducing the water bills through water leak detection.

A water flow data logger was fitted to the Thames Water meter, the system produces a visual flow profile of the water use through the main water meter and the by-pass water meter which records low water flow .

This type of meter is called a combination meter which water companies started to install as a replacement so that they were able to record low flow, where as the more common water meters didn’t record low flow and trials revealed the water companies were losing revenue as many large sites were not being billed accurately and low flow revenue was being lost.

A combination water meter has 2 dials, one that measures high flow down to a certain point and below that the low flow meter kicks in.

The picture below shows a combination water meter, the brass dial records low flow the other dial high flow.

When installing a water flow data logger it is important that both high and low flow is recorded. In this instance below Channel 2 (C2) records the low flow at 0.8 cubic metres per hours, which equates to 7,008 cubic metres of water being lost somewhere in the network which equates to £15,000 worth of water still to be found.
