Senior Water Consultant Graham Mann at H²0 Building Services informs you of a few interesting water and environmental key facts you may not know?
Water use in the home: –
Heating water is a major use of energy in homes within the UK.
A balanced diet of 3,000 kcal per day which is calculated at 80% vegetable and 20% animal requires 3 – 4m3 of water per day, or 70 times the 50 litres per capita needed for the basic household water needs.
Food and farming: –
Most of the global fresh water is frozen, locked up in Antarctica and Greenland, warmer temperatures globally means sea levels could rise about 0.5m by the end of the century.
Food and fibre account for 62% of the UK’s water footprint.
The total amount of water required in the production of 1kg of grain fed beef and poultry is at least 15m3 and about 5m3 of water respectively, grains / pulses and root crops need less than 2m3 per kg.
Uk economy and business: –
The floods during 2007 cost the UK economy an estimated £3.5b, extreme rainfall and flooding is likely to become more frequent and pose an even greater risk to the infrastructure.
Health and sanitation: –
The UK Water Industry spends around £225 million per year to treat potable drinking water supplies for faecal organisms, pesticides and suspended matter.
Roughly 1/6 of the world’s population (1.1 billion) do not have access to safe drinking water.
An estimated 2.2 million people in low to medium income countries and mostly children die each year from diseased associated with lack of clean water access and inadequate and poor sanitation.
