Water leak detection case study John Cotton Ltd.

Author: Graham Mann, Water Audit Expert.

John Cotton Ltd called in H²O Building Services to assist with identifying the reason for a rise in water consumption and costs, the previous water consumption was 1.8m3 per day which had increased to 16.3m3 per day at this rate John Cotton costs would increase by up to £ 15,000 by the year end. H²O carried out water leak detection in order to identify the water loss and to submit a written report together with recommendations and costs for repair. During the survey the internal valve was shut in order to ascertain of the water loss was underground between the water meter and the internal; point of entry of the water supply.

Then the water meter located in a meter chamber just in front of the boundary fence was checked to see if water flow was registering, water was still passing through the water meter soil and rubble was removed from the chamber to expose the water pipe and electric sounding kit verified the leak noise fully confirming the water leak on the supply pipe was within the chamber on a fitting.

The water leak was promptly repaired and the water consultants H²O Building Services submitted a claim  to Yorkshire Water for a leakage refund which is an allowance given if you can prove the leaked water went into the ground and not the water company sewerage system. The result was a refund of £ 6,915.13.
