Hospital takes urgent action on a £1,000 per day metered water leak.
Author: Graham Mann, Water Audit Expert.
Urgent water leak detection was carried out at a Hospital after it was discovered that the on line water flow monitoring system was showing a 15m3 per hour water loss at a cost of £ 1,000 per day. Preliminary site investigations had already taken place to narrow down the area of underground leakage, however a specialist team of water leak detection experts were required in order to pinpoint the exact location of the water leak for urgent excavation and leak repair.
The leak detection team deployed a leak noise correlator, this is a piece of kit that measures noise between two points and gives us a visual display in graphic form of the exact location of leak noise between two points, an acoustic probe is placed on each underground fitting between two points, in this case one on each fire hydrant.

The water leak location was marked down and the water main excavated and exposed for repair, the water leak can be seen on the exposed water pipe. Incredible to think that costs of £ 1,000 per day are attributed to this leak.
